BOYS BE review
BOYS BE (2015)
The second part of my SVT discography review! This track-by-track review was written in the autumn of 2022 while I was high, but my opinions haven't changed much.
Ranking system:
🍇 - 10.0 BNM one of their most iconic slays
🍉 - fantastic song that made me feel something
🍓 - eating, a few flaws that are either easy to overlook or a bit charming
🍊 - good background music but i wouldn't seek it out
🍌 - it does nothing for me but isn't outright offensive
🍐 - does nothing for me and is offensive
🍈 - so bad that it almost wraps back around to good just bc i was laffing so much
(note: tracklists are not in album order. they are very loosely ranked)
🍐🍈 Fronting
"Seventeen can't control these feelings" excuse me? How many of you? WHO said they loved your rap? Can't digest breakfast? Waving the tail? IJBOL that twinkling synth and the HEY HEY chants during the hook I'm going to lose it. Scoups: DRESS MODESTLY! ok this is so… COLLARBONES?? WHAT ARE YOU, THE SCHOOL DRESS CODE?? STFU. Wonu being "excited" yeah he was wet. Under the red lights yeah they were at the strip club. Okay that was…weirdly like a bad stray kids song mixed with a swaggot song and kinda made me feel intruded upon LMFAOOOO also kind of giving me lil dicky vibes idk
🍊 OMG
Okay I have several questions. So first of all where did Pledis find this Kreayshawn demo? Dino kinda chewed his rap. Most of this song is the same thing, so it really does sound like a demo, but I'm assuming it's meant to be BGM for their performance rather than an actual song you could release as a single. But yeah this is…dated, even for 2015. I was gonna say it sounds like a Lady Gaga The Fame album reject, but then I heard the DJ snake synth and remembered Lady Gaga is busy performing jazz standards with Tony Bennett at this moment in time. Perfu have no queens to guide them through this, and they have yet to discover the true cuntresses inside themselves. A neat novelty but not something I'd listen to.
🍓🍈 ROCK
Okay, this is camp. Looking camp in the eye. Jeonghan was looking camp RIGHT in the eye. I don't see how anyone could dislike this song like do you hate THEE GIRLIES NIGHT OUT??? OMG ok I'm dying because I just realized this is the song from that !? Halloween vid!?;?! Icon status we love her. The drums on the second verse…Seungkwan was feeling himself and living his best life as well. Gyro drop IJBOL but for real if you hate on this track you hate on gay club culture because this was real in the late 2000s early 2010s . They have been there for sure. Kind of one of the best things I've ever heard idk.
🍉 When I Grow Up
Is it just me or is this sorta…sad? Like, really really sad? I was genuinely upset by this song, which I didn't expect. I guess I'm just weak for songs about this theme in general. I suspect kidult will do me in when I finally hear it. Just…the thought of little thoughtful melancholic woozi acknowledging his own lack of life experience in comparison to the people around him…my little prodigy. Also everyone sounds good in a way like…I feel as though in their later songs they really clean up the vocals and do a ton of correction but here they leave some flaws in and it really makes the whole thing that much sadder. Seungkwan's wedding singer voice…woozi's heart song…DK CHORUS…why was Vocu always so superior? Woozi was pouring his heart into their material…
🍇 MANSAE
This is a classic, I think it's so much better than Adore U that it's not even funny. Woozi found his footing and improved upon his already successful formula, with fantastic results. It's fun, it's camp, it's goofy, it's iconic, it's a good fucking song. It doesn't ever really wear out on me, either. I'm happy to hear it all the time because that chorus is so EPIC for real. And also S.COOOOOOOOUUUUUUUPS is the best line in k-pop. That silly bass line during the Mansae Mansae Mansae part is epic and fun. Unrelated to the song itself, I really love the choreo. Especially the beginning, it's super cute. And the pouting kicking the leg back and forth move in the chorus lol. This is one of Freshteen's peaks for sure.
